Campania is struggling to climb the rankings in Italy, remaining firmly anchored in the lower part.

falls to the penultimate place, followed only by Reggio Calabria, in the thirty-fifth edition of the annual survey of the , which measures well-being in the 107 Italian provinces.

The other provinces of Campania are also not shining: Caserta is 101st, down three positions compared to last year; Salerno loses four places and stops at 92nd. The situation is better, but not exciting, for Benevento and Avellino, respectively 76th and 73rd, with small improvements compared to the previous survey.

The survey, launched in 1990, analyzes 90 indicators divided into six macro-areas: wealth and consumption, business and work, environment and services, demography and health, justice and security, culture and free time. The 2023 data show a picture of a strong gap between north and south, with the northern provinces dominating the top positions. Bergamo leads the ranking, followed by Trento and Bolzano, while among the top ten the only cities from the center-south are Bologna and Ascoli Piceno.

Naples: Alarm on environment, safety and child well-being

The capital of Campania has seen a significant decline, slipping to 106th place. The city struggles especially in areas related to wealth and consumption, where it is last, and justice and security, where it is in third-last place. The environment also weighs: Naples is 101st in this category, penalized by indicators such as the quality of urban services and the efficiency of environmental management.

Particularly worrying are the data relating to the well-being of the most vulnerable groups. The quality of life for children is in 102nd place, followed by negative data for young people and the elderly. However, some positive notes emerge: Naples is in 24th place for business and work, with significant growth recorded between 2017 and 2022. The climate is also a strong point, thanks to an excellent position for hours of sunshine and low incidence of heat waves.

The other provinces of Campania: lights and shadows

Caserta, down from last year, ranks 101st. The province suffers in almost all the categories analyzed, being second to last for the risk related to heat waves and among the last for the environment and services, with a slightly better position in wealth and consumption.

Salerno ranks 92nd, with mediocre performances in many categories. The quality of life for children, young people and the elderly is in line with the low overall score, as are the difficulties related to wealth and consumption, which see the province in the last positions.

A more stable picture emerges for Benevento and Avellino. Benevento improves by two positions, reaching 76th place, with above-average results for the quality of life of children and young people. Even in business and work, as well as in justice and security, the province manages to distinguish itself with relatively high positions. Avellino, for its part, makes a leap forward, gaining six positions compared to last year. Although it suffers in the business and work sector, where it loses fifteen places, it stands out in the justice and security category, where it climbs to 26th place thanks to a notable progress.

  1. The situation in Campania is worrying, but I don't understand how it is possible that Naples slips so much in the ranking. Perhaps there should be more attention on these problems to improve people's lives.
