Campania holds a sad record: it is the region with the highest percentage of smokers (29% of adults between 18 and 69, compared to the national average of 24,5%) and the most sedentary, with 48,2% of the population physically inactive.
Added to this is a worrying 50,2% of citizens who are overweight (38,8% overweight, 11,4% obese). The data, released by Aiom, Fondazione Airc, Fondazione Aiom and Sirm, highlight smoking as the main cause of lung cancer (9 diagnoses out of 10) and 27 other pathologies, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
Every year, in Campania over 33 thousand new cases of cancer are recorded, with colorectal, lung and breast among the most frequent. Adherence to cancer screening remains low: only 20,3% are tested for colorectal cancer, 27,8% for cervical cancer and 33,6% for breast cancer.
To combat the emergency, the #SOStenereSSN campaign proposes a 5 euro increase in the price of cigarettes, allocating the funds to the National Health Service.
From May 13 to 16, the Vespucci Mediterranean Tour stops in Naples (Villaggio IN Italia, Stazione Marittima – Molo Beverello), with oncologists and volunteers who will offer advice and informational material on prevention.
Meanwhile, the Campania Oncology Network guarantees uniform treatment pathways, while focusing on low-dose CT for the early diagnosis of lung cancer, capable of reducing mortality by 20% in heavy smokers.
