Naples – A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided this morning in the heart of the Vomero neighborhood. In Via Scarlatti, at number 213, one of the historic plane trees that characterize the area suddenly collapsed, falling into the middle of the street.
Only a fortunate coincidence avoided dramatic consequences, as at the time the tree collapsed there were neither cars nor pedestrians passing by, even though Via Scarlatti is notoriously a busy road.
The one who reported the incident was the deputy of the Green and Left Alliance (Avs), Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who made public a video of thetree shot down on his Facebook page. The video, sent by a local resident, is accompanied by an eloquent comment: “We are alive by a miracle.”
The episode rekindles concerns about the stability and maintenance of the city's tree heritage, especially in densely populated areas such as Vomero, where the presence of centuries-old trees represents an added value but also requires constant monitoring to prevent dangerous situations. We are now waiting for investigations to understand the causes of the collapse and verify whether there are responsibilities in the lack of prevention.
