Benevento – The Carabinieri of the Ponte Station, in the province of Benevento, have completed an operation that unmasked five scammers, reported for a series of scams against unsuspecting citizens.
The investigations, conducted with the help of information technology and financial flow analysis, allowed us to reconstruct three distinct fraud episodes, all of which had in common the use of digital platforms to deceive the victims.
In the first case, two individuals of Tuscan origin were reported for a scam orchestrated on a well-known social platform, very popular among young people. The two advertised a car rental service at advantageous prices, convincing a victim to pay a deposit to reserve a vehicle.
After the payment, however, the car was never delivered and the contacts with the alleged renters were interrupted. Thanks to the meticulous investigative activity, the Carabinieri have identified the responsible parties, now reported to the Judicial Authority.
In a second incident, a 49-year-old Sicilian was reported for defrauding the owner of a local bed & breakfast. The man, after booking a room, sent a text message with a link that simulated payment of the agreed sum.
By clicking on the link, the operator unknowingly authorized a P2P (person-to-person) transaction, resulting in a charge on his prepaid card. The digital traceability of the transaction allowed the military to trace the scammer.
Finally, a Neapolitan man was reported for a fraud related to the online sale of a car engine. After receiving payment via bank transfer, the seller never delivered the goods.
In this case too, the rapid intervention of the Carabinieri allowed the person responsible to be identified and the fraudulent system to be unmasked.
The reports are a clear signal against cyber crimes, which are increasingly frequent. The Carabinieri of Ponte continue monitoring activities to combat online scams and protect citizens, inviting them to pay maximum attention in digital transactions.
