The arrest of the Carabinieri
He turned an act of solidarity into a months-long nightmare, going so far as to threaten the life of a 70-year-old pensioner in order to continue getting money. For this reason, a 57-year-old man, originally from the province of Salerno, resident in Sestu but essentially homeless, was arrested by the Carabinieri on charges of attempted extortion.
The incident occurred in Cagliari, where the victim met the 57-year-old near a supermarket. According to investigators' reconstruction, the pensioner initially decided to help him with small financial contributions.
What began as voluntary donations, however, quickly turned into increasingly insistent demands. "The sums, initially modest and spontaneous," the Carabinieri explain, "over time became a veritable imposition, reaching considerable figures."
Since 2024, the elderly man allegedly gave the man over 20 euros, including through bank transfers, in an attempt to avoid problems and constant pressure.
When the pensioner decided to resist and stop payments, the situation escalated. The 57-year-old allegedly began making death threats, even claiming he would harm his friends.
It was precisely some people close to the victim who convinced him to go to the police and formalise the complaint, bringing to light a picture of harassment and intimidation that continued over time.
After the complaint was filed, the military organized a targeted surveillance operation near the pensioner's home, where a new meeting was scheduled to hand over the money.
The 57-year-old showed up punctually for the appointment: after ringing the doorbell, he entered the building's entrance hall, convinced he was about to collect yet another sum. However, he was met by the Carabinieri, who stopped him and arrested him.
