Naples: Illegal landfill seized in Camaldoli protected area

Naples – The Court of Naples has ordered a precautionary seizure against a businessman active in the construction, earthmoving, waste management, and environmental remediation sectors. At the center of the investigation, coordinated by the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office, is the former Suarez quarry, located in the Metropolitan Park of the Hills of Naples, an area subject to landscape and environmental restrictions.

The company responsible for the site's environmental reclamation and restoration, linked to the entrepreneur, is said to have turned the area into an illegal landfill. According to investigations by the judicial police, construction waste was dumped instead of permitted materials for the quarry's redevelopment. Experts estimate the presence of 146.000-176.000 cubic meters of waste, including construction and demolition materials, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals, posing risks to the surrounding environment and the surrounding area.

The investigations also revealed a failure to carry out the safety and environmental restoration measures prescribed by the competent authorities. Arpac and ISPRA estimated the cost of removing 8.000 cubic meters of material alone at approximately €3 million.

The order was issued by the Economic and Financial Police Unit of the Naples Guardia di Finanza, the Carabinieri Environmental Protection Command – Ecological Operations Unit of Naples, and the Naples Local Police – Lawyer Operations Unit.
