Giugliano: Large fire in Taverna del Re: Eco-bales site engulfed in flames

Giugliano – A large fire broke out this afternoon inside the Taverna del Re eco-bales storage site, on the outskirts of Giugliano in Campania, bordering the province of Caserta. The flames affected the area where some of the waste accumulated during the years of the Campania waste emergency is still present.

Firefighting operations are underway. Firefighters and Carabinieri officers from the 10th Campania Regiment, along with soldiers from the Giugliano Company, are on site. No one has been reported injured in the fire at this time.

Flames in the eco-bales area

Taverna del Re is one of the symbols of the long-running waste crisis affecting Campania. The site was built to store the eco-bales produced by regional plants during the most critical years of the crisis.

For a long time, the area hosted a significant portion of the approximately six million eco-bales packaged in Campania's waste treatment plants and destined for final disposal.

The disposal is not yet complete

In recent years, the progressive removal of the eco-bales has begun, placed on large concrete platforms built on land that was once used for cultivation.

The process, however, has not yet been concluded. Some of the waste remains in the area, while the issue of the site's future use remains open.

A huge area still waiting for a future

Taverna del Re is a massive area, spanning nearly four square kilometers. Once the eco-bales are removed, the final destination of this area, which for decades has been associated with Campania's environmental emergency, remains to be determined.

The fire thus brings attention to a chapter that, despite the removal efforts begun in recent years, cannot yet be considered definitively closed.
