Naples: Tourist hit by hit-and-run car on the seafront: 19-year-old driver turns himself in

Naples – A full-scale manhunt for the hit-and-run driver was unleashed after a serious accident on the Naples waterfront, where a 24-year-old tourist was struck by a car that, immediately after the impact, sped away without stopping to provide assistance. The victim, a student, was seriously injured and remains in critical condition.

The Local Police Road Accident Unit immediately launched an investigation into the case, working to precisely reconstruct the dynamics of the accident and, above all, to put a face and name to the driver responsible for the hit-and-run.

Cameras and dashcams to identify the car

Investigators acquired and carefully examined video surveillance footage from the area, cross-referencing it with data from cameras capable of detecting the license plates of passing vehicles. This meticulous work gradually narrowed down the possible vehicles involved.

A driver who witnessed the incident while stopped in oncoming traffic also provided significant assistance to the investigation. He provided the local police with the images recorded by his car's dashcam.

The footage captured some moments of the accident, providing investigators with additional information to reconstruct what happened. The image quality, however, was insufficient to allow for a definitive identification of the vehicle. Officers therefore had to proceed with a careful comparison, focusing their investigations on a small group of vehicles compatible with the one captured by the camera.

The 19-year-old turns himself in to the police

The breakthrough came just as the investigation was still ongoing. The driver of a Citroën C1, a 19-year-old, turned himself in, thus putting an end to the search for the hit-and-run driver.

According to investigators' reconstruction, the young man was driving the car involved in the collision and subsequent escape. He was charged with aggravated motor vehicle injury due to the escape. His driver's license was revoked, and the vehicle was seized.

The 19-year-old's situation is now being examined by the judicial authorities, who will evaluate the evidence gathered by investigators and any further responsibilities related to the dynamics of the accident.

The young woman's condition remains serious

On the health front, however, the greatest concern remains. The 24-year-old, injured in the crash, remains in serious condition. While the investigation has identified the alleged perpetrator of the escape, the condition of the young student, the victim of a collision in one of the areas most frequented by residents and tourists, remains to be monitored.
