“In Naples, out of 110 118 doctors, about 75 could leave. It would mean only providing transport to the hospital and no longer treating people upon arrival on site”.
Giuseppe Galano, director of 118 in Naples and coordinator of Campania, said this, explaining the intention of many doctors to leave the emergency after the ruling that requires them to return the supplementary compensation of recent years. "Without taking away the dignity of the nurse - explains Galano - I must however remember that by law they cannot make the diagnosis and treatment, so at that point all those who call 118 will be transported to the hospital. I say this also as an exhortation to pay attention to this problem that cannot be limited to integrating compensation for the future but must absolutely resolve the recovery of the past which is around 100.000 euros per doctor".

And then he adds: “You can’t repay a professional class like the 118 doctors in this way, I think we all judged these men as heroes and now we treat them like tax evaders”. Galano then underlines that “while I am convinced that there is an administrative bureaucratic problem that can be solved, the lack of a 118 doctor could worsen the problems of the emergency room, something that a system put to the test by Covid could not bear. I quote a figure: last year alone we treated about 20.000 interventions, including many Covid, treated on site without taking them to the hospital. This fundamental filter that 118 has made, if it were to fail, would really put us in difficulty. Perhaps one solution could be to change the status of the 118 doctors, no longer contracted but hired by the ASL, in order to give rights and full stability to their compensation”.
