"Scafati gives the opportunity to fully understand the importance of the Pope's invitation to an integral ecology - explains the parish priest, Don Giovanni De Riggi -. The city was in fact built around the Sarno River and for this reason its fate is linked to the state of life of the river. The pollution of the riverbed has a decisive impact on the city and affects the citizens, on their lives.
Over the years, there has been no shortage of active commitments by associations and spontaneous groups that, by monitoring the situation, have been sentinels on the territory and a goad for the competent institutions to take action to find a solution to the problem: the attention of a few must now become the attention of all. The Sarno is a common good that must be dear to every inhabitant of this city".
Speakers: Monsignor Antonio Di Donna, president of the Campania Episcopal Conference, and Fulvio Bonavitacola, vice president and environmental councilor of the Campania Region. The meeting – moderated by the episcopal vicar for Charity and Justice of the diocese of Nola, Don Aniello Tortora – will be opened with greetings from the mayor of Scafati, Cristoforo Salvati, and the bishop of Nola, Monsignor Francesco Marino. The conclusions will be entrusted to the parish priest Don Giovanni De Riggi.
"The care of creation - underlines the episcopal vicar Don Aniello Tortora - has always been at the center of the pastoral action of the diocese of Nola, which has promoted dialogue with the institutions and civil society. A new commitment and a new responsibility are needed to protect the Sarno River. From here comes the idea of holding a conference with two voices: that of the local church so that, with the prophetic force of Laudato si', it once again spurs commitment to the environment, and that of the Region, so that it can share what has been done and what still needs to be done to return the river to the city".
