Amalfi - The symbolic cities of Italian tourism have signed the "Amalfi Charter", a pact for more sustainable tourism that respects local communities.
The agreement, born from the national summit "Destinations and Communities for a more sustainable tourism", promoted in Amalfi, aims to define a new relationship between tourist destinations and residents, addressing crucial issues such as hospitality, residency, taxation, mobility and security.
Mayors united for quality tourism
Over 25 mayors and public officials from top locations such as Capri, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Courmayeur, and Taormina gathered to discuss the sector's challenges and opportunities.
Amalfi Mayor Daniele Milano emphasized the importance of recognizing the unique characteristics of tourist-oriented towns, which require adequate resources and tools to manage the influx of visitors.

One of the key points of the Charter is the need to manage tourist flows more effectively, to ensure a quality experience for visitors and preserve the liveability of local communities.
The mayor of Capri, Paolo Falco, proposed limiting the number of landings on the island, while the mayor of Naples and president of ANCI, Gaetano Manfredi, highlighted the urgent need to rethink existing regulatory mechanisms.

Concrete proposals for sustainable tourism
Among the proposals put forward by the mayors, the establishment of Special Tourist Zones (ZTS) stands out, which would allow municipalities to manage tourist flows more flexibly by regulating access and entry times.
Furthermore, greater flexibility was requested in hiring temporary staff and in local taxation, to meet the needs associated with the high influx of visitors.
The government's commitment
The president of the Senate tourism commission, Luca De Carlo, promised to welcome the mayors' proposals and translate them into concrete actions, recognizing the fundamental role of municipalities in land management.
A team game for the future of tourism
The "Amalfi Charter" represents an important step toward more sustainable and responsible tourism, one that takes into account the needs of local communities and preserves the authenticity of the territories. The mayors emphasized the importance of teamwork to address the sector's challenges and ensure a prosperous future for Italian tourism.

The Amalfi Charter initiative seems interesting but I am not sure if the proposals are sufficient. Mayors should do more for residents and not only think about tourists. Managing flows is complicated.
