His lifeless body was found on Thursday morning in the isolation cell of the Secondigliano prison, where he had been transferred just over a month ago after deciding to collaborate with justice.
Around the neck, one nylon bag tied with a strip of sheet: everything points to suicide, but the investigations by the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office of Naples are still ongoing.
Ligato, originally from Pignataro Maggiore, was under a strict regime of protection for his status of repented. The Penitentiary Police officers found him already lifeless: the death had occurred several hours earlier. Despite immediate aid, there was nothing that could be done.
It was son of Raffaele Ligato, who died in prison in 2022, and of Maria Giuseppa Lubrano, sister of Vincenzo Lubrano, another well-known boss. His collaboration with the DDA of Naples could shed light on dangerous links between business, politics and the Camorra in Terra di Lavoro, with possible new shocks in the already tormented criminal landscape of Caserta.
The penitentiary management, led by Giulia Russo, alerted the District anti-mafia prosecutor's office, which ordered the seizure of the body and the autopsy. The first findings confirm aasphyxiation from suffocation. Being in isolation, the most accredited hypothesis remains that of suicide.
Ligato had been questioned the day before his death
Just the day before his death, Ligato had been questioned by the magistrates. It was not his first meeting with the DDA, but perhaps one of the most delicate. His revelations could have uncovered new behind-the-scenes information on illicit business and collusion.
