Neuroradiology of the Cardarelli, directed by Mario Muto, has been identified by the Campania Region as a reference center for minimally invasive endovascular and spinal neuroradiological interventions.
Interventional neuroradiology, as stated in a note, is the branch of radiology that allows for operations on cerebral vessels and the spinal column, intervening with small catheters or needles in the blood vessels or through the skin, using radiographic images to visualize the site of the intervention.
The identification of the Cardarelli facility as a reference center "is an important recognition, the result of a long history of assistance and a consolidated case history both in the field of emergency management and in scheduled assistance activities".
Cardarelli was the first hospital in Italy in 1961 to host a Neuroradiology unit thanks to the experience that Prof. Alberto Calabrò brought to Naples from Sweden and France.
In 2022 alone, the department performed 130 operations to treat vascular malformations as well as 1200 minimally invasive spinal surgeries performed with minimal openings in the skin.
The center provides treatment for spinal pain caused by herniated discs or vertebral collapses caused by osteoporosis or metastases. The Cardarelli team treats vascular malformations such as cerebral aneurysms, malformations and fistulas that can cause cerebral hemorrhages or strokes. This feature allows us to work better both in emergencies and in a planned manner, ensuring therapeutic solutions for various pathologies located on the spinal column and in the brain.
The recognition as a regional reference center further qualifies the levels of excellence achieved by our Unit”. The quality of care is confirmed by the numbers of procedures performed by the department. In the last 18 months, 600 strokes have been treated, with an average of more than one per day.
In 42% of these patients, thrombolysis therapies were performed within 40 minutes of the first symptoms and in 63% of cases, mechanical therapies were completed within 90 minutes of the onset of the disease.
The exceptionality of this case study has marked Cardarelli as one of the few hospitals in Italy with the “Diamond” recognition from the European Stroke Society.
