“We are concerned that the Campania Region has identified the construction of a fast road from Eboli in Agropoli.
The project, by ANAS, submitted to public debate, includes the construction of a fast-flowing road as a variant of the SS18 between Agropoli and the A2 Mediterranean – Eboli motorway, from the Agropoli Sud junction of the SP430, crossing the territories of the municipalities of Agropoli, Capaccio, Albanella, Altavilla Silentina, Serre and Eboli up to the A2 with a new motorway junction between those of Eboli and Contursi.
An estimated cost between 1,5 and 2 billion euros. The aim would be to speed up and decongest the SS18 serving the seaside resorts of Cilento, improving the local road system involved and, through new junctions, accessibility to the archaeological and landscape area of Paestum, Velia and the Certosa di Padula.
In Campania we believe that there are many other priorities, such as making schools and public buildings safe (about 60% of schools in Campania do not have a certificate of habitability and about 53% do not have a fire prevention certificate), the adaptation and strengthening of the public hospital system (structures and equipment).
The completion of water infrastructure (leaky aqueducts, sewerage networks and missing purification plants), the strengthening of public transport by rail (trains, metro, trams) also serving the areas in question, the construction of plants (primarily those for the treatment of organic waste) to increase the separate collection and recycling of urban waste.
Furthermore, the land consumption must be considered, which with the project would see hundreds of agricultural companies in the plain deprived of surfaces suitable for cultivation” In a note, Legambiente Campania together with its territorial circles expresses its opposition to the project for a fast-flowing road as a variant of the SS18 between Agropoli and the A2 Mediterranean motorway – Eboli,
“The policies for “Clean and sustainable mobility” - concludes Legambiente Campania - shared by Italy with other EU member countries, include the commitment to become climate-neutral by 2050. To this end, the transport sector must undergo a transformation that requires a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, while ensuring affordable solutions for citizens.
Therefore, to speed up and decongest the SS18 to serve the seaside resorts of Cilento, it is necessary to focus primarily on sustainable mobility, by strengthening rail transport in an intermodal setting, associated with the transport of bicycles on trains by travellers, car sharing at the destination stations of Cilento, etc.
To this can be added intelligent (smart) systems for directing traffic flows by exploiting existing alternative road axes and for some, such as the so-called "aversana", integrating the pre-existing ones with new connection sections.
