After the summit at the Ministry of Health judged "positive", the Caserta buffalo farmers removed the garrison with tractors that had been stationed for over two weeks on the Domiziana state road between Castel Volturno and Mondragone, in the Caserta area, near the Agnena roundabout.
“We had the objective of opening a space for institutional debate to democratically assert our reasons and the objective was achieved” says with satisfaction Gianni Fabbris, spokesperson for the Coordinamento Unitario which brings together 23 associations and which for over a year has been fighting for the Campania Region to withdraw the plan for the eradication of brucellosis and buffalo tuberculosis launched in March 2022.
A plan deemed too unbalanced towards the slaughter of buffalo found positive to the first test for brucella - in 10 years the farmers have repeatedly reported, 140 thousand buffalo have been slaughtered for suspected brucellosis of which only 1,4% were found to be actually sick following post-mortem analyses - while the farmers are asking for the application of the European regulation that provides for the slaughter of buffalo only after two tests both positive.
“The National Government and the Parliament – adds Fabbris – they have become active while the Campania Region has continued to avoid confrontation with a thousand excuses that, ultimately, betray not only the arrogance with which an irresponsible part of politics claims to exercise government but, above all, the fear of confronting those who do not agree with you regardless and in advance.
We are also comforted by the active role of almost all the political forces that sit in Parliament, therefore also those that support the political majority in the Campania Region".
