“Compromised health and hygiene conditions” in the juvenile penal institute (IPM) of Airola, in the province of Benevento, where “the presence of numerous medium and large sized rats, circulating within the 'Article 21' section” has been reported.
The Penitentiary Police unions Sinappe, Uilpa, Uspp and Cgil-Funzione Pubblica denounced this in a joint note, sending a letter, among others, to the head of the Juvenile Justice department Antonio Sangermano and to the general director Giuseppe Cacciapuoti.
The top management is asked "to seriously consider the early closure of the IPM pending the restructuring approved by the PNRR". As underlined in the press release, "the presence of rats is mainly due to the dilapidated conditions of the structure" where the living conditions are compromised.
Nevertheless, the unions add, the "higher bodies continue to turn a deaf ear, putting at serious risk first and foremost the mental and physical health" of the operators and the prisoners who, it is explained, "live there 24 hours a day". Sinappe, Uilpa, Uspp and Cgil-Funzione Pubblica ask for "incisive and urgent interventions to prevent a real invasion" and, finally, "the early closure of the juvenile penal institution".
