The Bard's dialogues are the starting point for a contemporary rewriting that comes from the actors' improvisations, combining the story of Anthony and Cleopatra with that of Philip and Teresa. At the center of the theatrical work, the reasons for conflict between the two characters/actors and the indissoluble strength of their bond. Antony and Cleopatra is the starting point of a journey towards the theme of desire. A text with 34 characters, one of Shakespeare's historical dramas that includes choral scenes, epics, battles, long and complex dialogues, is reduced to a staging with only two actors, who are at the same time the protagonists and narrators of the events. The common thread is the uncertainty and absurdity of every human event. Antony and Cleopatra choose, at every moment of this story, and it always seems that they choose the wrong thing. Is it possible to desire what we think is best? This is the question from which the artists start.
In an African/Calabrian desert, which Anusc Castiglioni's scenes recall in an essential way, before our eyes appear, sitting in front of a low wall that protects and frames them, Cleopatra-Teresa and Antonio-Filippo dressed in modern clothes, which are based on the characters of the protagonists. They tell us a story, each time in a surprisingly different way, because the structure of the text has fixed appointments, but allows the actor to act according to the hic et nunc.
The spectator will never see the same show. The story is contaminated and flows from the fiction of the Shakespearean text to reality, to the daily life of two people who live the doubts, the choices, the amorous fights, the struggles and the peace treaties, the renunciations, the absences, the encounters, the joys of the effort of living and loving.
