Inmate attempts suicide in the women's section of Benevento prison: saved by the prompt intervention of prison police officers.
The prisoner, already known for previous episodes of attacks against Penitentiary Police personnel, of burning Penitentiary Administration material and of rioting, yesterday tried to end it all by obtaining a noose and attempting suicide by hanging, but the timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police personnel on duty averted the worst.
For the regional secretary CON.SI.PE Campania, Thomas De Lia “applause goes to all those personnel of the Campania Penitentiary Police who every day, amidst the many difficulties that the current Penitentiary system presents, manage with a spirit of sacrifice and a high sense of duty to save human lives from despair, like that of yesterday at Benevento.
Campania has 7400 inmates and many live in obsolete and overcrowded penitentiaries, but what is even more serious is the serious shortage of Penitentiary Police personnel for over 1000 units according to CON.SI.PE. given the workloads on the slightly less than 4000 police officers in force, but not all available due to various problems, give the perception of a state of abandonment that often creates great dismay, but above all a lack of security".
For the vice president CON.SI.PE. Louis Castaldo: “today, in light of the many critical issues that the Penitentiary Police Corps is experiencing, it has become a mission to operate in certain contexts, which should be valued in many aspects; the Government should incentivize with the means at its disposal, the many penitentiary police officers on the front line who every day face realities that are unknown and surreal to many, where only patience and courage make the difference”.
For CON.SI.PE, applause goes to the female staff of the Benevento prison who yesterday performed a gesture that was both dutiful and noble.
