The Carabinieri made nearly 8 arrests in 2024 for crimes under the Red Code. The force explained this in a statement presenting its initiatives for November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and reviewing its activities on the issue.

The Carabinieri's primary commitment "is to ensure women's safety and prevent situations that could escalate, paying particular attention to so-called 'indicator crimes', namely crimes such as stalking, mistreatment of family members and cohabitants, and sexual violence, which often lead to tragic and fatal outcomes for the victims."

In 2023, compared to 2022, the crimes prosecuted by the Carabinieri with reference to the Red Code increased from 54.062 to 55.374, confirming the prevailing percentage of those reported at the Stations. Carabinieri. With reference to the first ten months of 2024, the Carabinieri have prosecuted 46.317 crimes under the Red Code (395 in the province of Bolzano, whose perpetrators have all been reported to the judicial authorities).

On the investigative-repressive level, the institutional counteraction activity conducted by the Arma has been particularly significant. In fact, last year, as regards the Red Code, 7.644 people were arrested compared to 7.111 arrests in 2022. In the first ten months of 2024, there were 7.928 arrests.

"Looking to the future," the statement reads, "the Carabinieri intend to continue their contribution to preventing and combating this phenomenon, fully aware of the difficulties of intercepting individual criminal incidents early, unlike many other types of crimes. This is because the seriousness of the crimes becomes apparent and they are reported long after the onset of the harassing behavior, at a stage that is already critical for the physical integrity and safety of the victims."

Gender-based violence "is a serious cultural and social phenomenon, against which restrictive measures alone are not enough. Instead, an evolutionary process of the anthropological component must be considered essential, one that keeps pace with the rapidly changing nature of society."
