Another suicide shakes the prison Poggioreale, in Naples. A 32-year-old prisoner of Algerian origin took his own life, once again bringing to light the critical conditions of the Italian penitentiary system.
The alarm of the Medical Association
“We can no longer tolerate this indifference,” Bruno Zuccarelli, president of the Naples Medical Association, forcefully declared. “Poggioreale is not an isolated case; suicides in prison have become a national emergency. The Government has the moral and institutional duty to intervene urgently.”
Overcrowding and structural deficiencies
Zuccarelli pointed the finger at overcrowding, the lack of health personnel and psychological support, degrading living conditions and the absence of effective policies for the rehabilitation of prisoners. All factors that contribute to an unsustainable climate of desperation.
The difficult situation of prison doctors
Even prison doctors are faced with a dramatic reality, forced to operate in prohibitive conditions and with insufficient tools. "Our colleagues do what they can, but they see their commitment frustrated by a system that forces them to work in prohibitive conditions," added Zuccarelli.
Call for urgent reforms
The appeal of the Medical Association is clear: immediate reforms, concrete investments and a change of direction that places respect for human rights at the center are needed. "Continuing to ignore this tragedy means being complicit in it," concluded Zuccarelli.
