Gioia Tauro – Another blow to international drug trafficking has been carried out by the Reggio Calabria Guardia di Finanza and the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM).
Law enforcement officers intercepted and seized a shipment of 1.170 kilograms of highly pure cocaine hidden inside bags of combustible material, in an attempt to evade customs and police controls at the port of Gioia Tauro.
The illicit cargo was discovered during a series of inspections on 11 suspicious containers , coming from a port in southern Brazil and destined for a company based in Reggio Calabria , after having made a stopover in Spain.
According to authorities' estimates, the drugs, once released onto the Italian and European markets, would have generated profits of over €187 million . The operation confirms the strategic role of the port of Gioia Tauro in international drug trafficking routes and the constant vigilance of law enforcement in combating the phenomenon.
