Gioia Tauro – Another blow to international drug trafficking has been struck by the Financial Police of Reggio Calabria and by 'Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM).
Law enforcement intercepted and seized a shipment of 1.170 kilograms of pure cocaine hidden inside bags of combustible material, in an attempt to evade customs and police controls at the port of Gioia Tauro.
The illicit cargo was discovered during a series of inspections on 11 suspicious containers, coming from a port in the south of Brazil and intended for a company based in Reggio Calabria, after having made a stopover in Spain.
According to the authorities' estimates, the drug, once placed on the Italian and European market, would have guaranteed profits of over 187 million euro. The operation confirms the strategic role of the port of Gioia Tauro in the routes of international drug trafficking and the constant attention of law enforcement in combating the phenomenon.

It is important that law enforcement do their job to stop drug trafficking, but it is strange that there are always problems like this. More controls and attention are needed to avoid these serious situations that damage society.
