A single boat, four rowers, four symbols: Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice. The image chosen to represent the 70th edition of the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics is a manifesto of cohesion and power. The sketch – signed by the graphic studio Lettera7 – celebrates the effort of the race and, together, the strength of the union between the cities that were rivals on the sea and that today, instead, share a common history to honor and pass on.
The rowing race, scheduled Sunday May 18 in the stretch of water between Capo di Vettica and the Amalfi bay, will be the culmination of a series of cultural and sporting events that, like every year, embrace the entire peninsula. It will be the eighteenth time that Amalfi hosts the event, born in 1955 to celebrate the glories of Italian seafaring.
"Four stylised rowers rowing together towards the future: it is the dynamic image of a challenge that, for 70 years, has united cities in a great collective effort, in the name of history and national identity" declared the mayor of Amalfi Daniele Milan, who also chairs the organizing committee.
And right in Amalfi, the smallest but also among the proudest of the Republics, we have been working for months to make this edition memorable. Coming soon an unprecedented historical exhibition, which will tell – through the visual arts – the entire epic of the Palio. There will be no shortage cultural conferences, with scholars from the four cities, nor the most popular events: the women's palio, the Presentation of the crews and the spectacular Historical Parade, scheduled for Saturday, May 17.
During the procession, the symbolic figures of the ancient republics will parade: Sergio and Maria for Amalfi, Kinzica of the Sismondi for Pisa, William Embriaco for Genoa, Caterina Cornaro for Venice. A large open-air theater, which attracts thousands of spectators every year.
«Amalfi awaits this event with enthusiasm and pride» added the mayor of Milan. "It is an event that represents us and unites us. In a few days the balconies will be dressed with the flags of the Republics, a sign that the party is about to begin. The rivalry is there, and it is healthy, but it is the brotherhood to prevail, because this Palio is a message of peace and civilization that crosses time."

The article talks about a very beautiful and important regatta for Italian cities. I think it is right to celebrate the common history, but sometimes rivalries come back to the surface and it is not easy to unite. Let's hope that everything goes well.
It is interesting that Amalfi has been organizing this event for so long, but I do not understand how the republics can join forces, they have always been in competition. I hope that the historical exhibition will be really informative and attractive for visitors.
The idea of the Regatta of the Maritime Republics is something very interesting, but I don't know if this year there will be as many participants as in past years, I hope there will be a good turnout of public to see the event.
