Sorrento – A meeting dedicated to the prevention and management of forest fires took place this morning at the Palazzo Municipale in Sorrento as part of the European project Treeads, funded by the Horizon 2020 program.
The initiative was attended by representatives of the institutions, experts in the sector and students from the two comprehensive institutes in the city.
The Municipality of Sorrento is a partner in the project as a pilot site, selected for its physical, geographical and economic characteristics. Treeads aims to develop an integrated system for fire management, which includes prevention, detection and restoration of environmental damage, with a key role entrusted to technology, in particular the use of drones.
“Our community is particularly attentive to this issue,” said the president of the city council, Luigi Di Prisco, “because a fire not managed correctly would cause incalculable damage not only to the environment, but also to the local economy, which is strongly linked to tourism.”
During the meeting, the exercise held last October in Le Tore was also recalled, which allowed the solutions proposed by Treeads to be tested in the field, improving the effectiveness of the operational responses compared to the standards set by the regional plan.
"Our wooded areas present specific critical issues," added Di Prisco, "such as the presence of numerous non-hotel structures and a road network that is often unsuitable for fire-fighting vehicles. The use of drones tested by the project represents a strategic resource for monitoring and timely intervention."
The Treeads project thus confirms itself as a concrete opportunity to strengthen the protection of the territory through innovation.
