Naples: 80-year-old man dies after being hit in bus lane

A tragic accident marred the early morning in Naples. Around 6:20 a.m. today, on Via Nuova Poggioreale, a pedestrian in his 80s was struck and killed by a car while crossing the bus lane.

There was nothing that could be done for the man, who was violently hit by the vehicle: the rescuers who arrived on the scene could only confirm his instant death due to the very serious injuries he had sustained.

The intervention of the rescue services and the surveys

Officers from the Naples Local Police - Road Accident Unit responded promptly to the scene of the accident. They closed the affected section of the road to conduct technical surveys and reconstruct the exact sequence of events, verifying the contact points and the vehicle's speed, if any.

The investigations on the driver

The driver of the car was a 76-year-old man. As is standard practice in road homicide cases, the driver was taken to a medical facility for alcohol and drug tests, the results of which will be included in the investigation file.

Meanwhile, the officers proceeded to immediately withdraw the driver's license and to preventatively seize both the vehicle and the driver's cell phone, to verify possible distracted driving.
