“I think that people's private lives should remain private, but I also think that those who have a public role, a political role, have a little more responsibility. And I also did it for myself because I learned perhaps very late that it is very important to love and respect each other...”.
Vincent Spadafora, M5S deputy, guest of What's the weather like on Rai Tre he comes out on TV and gets emotional when addressing the issue of his homosexuality, which he declares publicly for the first time in his book 'Without reserves, in politics and in life'.
There are, he explains “two reasons” which led him to do it, “a reason – he emphasizes, resuming the speech after a long applause – it is very political, to testify my political commitment, for all those who fight every day for their rights and have less possibilities to do so than I do thanks to my role. But also a religious testimony, I am a Catholic who believes a lot in his faith, it may seem contradictory but it is not at all. In politics, homosexuality is also used to hurt, to hit the opponent, with a buzz that I wanted to turn off tonight”.
Spadafora also wants to highlight his Catholic faith as a factor “not in contradiction” and closes with a personal note: "Unfortunately, this issue in politics is still used to hurt the opponent, because of that background noise that is sometimes very squalid and that I have also suffered. This evening I wanted to turn off this noise - he underlines - knowing that I remain the man that I am, with all the journey, even complicated, personal, that each of us takes in our lives, for whatever reason. And for which we must have a lot of respect".
"I hope to be considered from tomorrow for what I do, for how I do it, the same man as always. Maybe from tomorrow - and this is the farewell, with a now more relaxed smile, from the Rai3 studio - I will be just a little happier. Because I will also be freer".
