Castellammare. Entrepreneurs with a penchant for extortion: these are Giovanni Cafiero, 43, and Gennaro Spronello, 40.
They were arrested yesterday by the Carabinieri on charges of attempted extortion aggravated by the mafia method and purpose due to their ties with the Cesarano clan. It is no coincidence that in the wiretaps attached to the precautionary order signed by the investigating judge Emilia Di Palma, at the request of the Dda of Naples it reads …“they have to understand who they are dealing with… the thugs of Via Pozzillo… those who command Castellammare from above and below”.
Theirs was a debt collection operation on behalf of the Cesarano clan against a group of entrepreneurs of Sant'Antonio Abate for an amount of 100mila euros. In practice they would not have paid for supplies to a company “friendly” to the Cesarano clan.
And so threats, phone calls and requests for money had begun in 2020. The Sant'Antonio Abate company that was targeted by the two members of the Cesarano clan had not paid a 2017 invoice of approximately 100 thousand euros to a Caserta-based company whose partner is a friend of Cafiero.
And for this reason the floricultural entrepreneur had insistently asked Spronello to "stay on top" of the owners of the Abatese company until they had recovered the money. Spronello, among other things, is not new to operations of this kind.
He had in fact been arrested last June for extortion against a well-known buffalo company. Eboli. Spronello actually works in the world of milk since he carries out transport on behalf of a company owned by the son of a well-known entrepreneur from Castellammare di Stabia Adolfo Greco sentenced last November to 8 years in prison as part of the Olimpo trial for links with the Stabia clans.
