The president of the FIGC, Gabriele Gravina, issued a call for respect for referees during a meeting held in Rome. During the meeting, Gravina emphasized not only the professionalism of referees, but also their dignity as individuals.
“It is essential that referees are treated with respect, not only for their professional competence, but also for their personal dignity”, Gravina said. He expressed his solidarity with them and urged them to form a great team.
The president stressed the importance of preventing any mistake by referees from calling into question the entire system, stressing that the referee cannot be expected to be infallible. He called for avoiding excessive reactions and not to hit referees, as this damages the entire system of Italian football.
Gravina praised Italian referees for their success at the international level, announcing that three Italian referees will be present in the upcoming international competitions. He highlighted that the presence of Italian referees in international matches has exceeded 15%, placing Italy in first place among the European federations.
“Our referees represent excellence for us. I congratulated them for the results obtained”, said Gravina. He concluded his speech by underlining the importance of offering adequate support to referees by the Italian football community.
