The gang, composed of three minors and an adult, committed a robbery around midnight in a takeaway pizzeria located in via Toscana, on the outskirts of Bologna. They were wearing masks and one of them was brandishing a machete about half a meter long, threatening the two employees of the place. After having looted the cash register, taking away 200 euros and the employees' cell phones, the four fled.
About ten days after the crime, which took place on April 29, the police were able to identify and arrest all the gang members: an 18-year-old adult and three 17-year-old minors. The investigations conducted by the Mobile Squad benefited greatly from the images from the pizzeria's video surveillance, which captured multiple phases of the assault, and from other videos from street cameras that filmed the robbers' escape. The latter, on board a Fiat Punto stolen a few days earlier in Marzabotto and then abandoned in Via Ferrarese, left the machete used during the crime in the vehicle.
The first individual to be identified was the 18-year-old, recognizable in the video while holding the weapon and already known to the authorities. He was captured by the border police in the province of Como, on the border with Switzerland, while he was trying to leave the country. Two of the 17-year-olds were identified in a reception center for minors in the Bologna area, where some clothes worn during the robbery were also found. The fourth member of the gang, also 17, was identified by investigators through analysis of his accomplices' social media. Some photos taken together, compared with the images of the robbery, led to his identification. He was found in Poviglio, in the Reggio Emilia area, by the Carabinieri.
All four, despite their young age, had criminal records. In particular, the 18-year-old was already wanted for a robbery committed in Naples.
