"As long as there are people dying of hunger, the Camorra will not die." This was said by the parish priest of Caivano, Don Maurizio Patriciello, during the hearing at the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the safety conditions and state of degradation of cities, for which he is a consultant, answering the members of the commission who asked him if the implemented model can be exported elsewhere.
“Many people have come to me to ask if they could work on the renovation of the 'Pino Daniele' center – he added – and we should also have the courage to distinguish between those who want to commit crimes and those who are forced to do so out of necessity.
Now we have a jewel, which is attracting many people, but we must also think about the future, to preserve this asset that until last year was a landfill. We must ensure that it is no longer abandoned”.
Don Patriciello also emphasized that now in Caivano there is a housing emergency. “People are picking on me – he explained – for 40 years no one seems to have noticed that there were 250 families occupying an entire neighborhood
Then in February they told me they would be evicted and I didn't sleep. And do you know who we have to thank if the situation didn't degenerate? The prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, who faced a sea of very angry people.
Now someone will have to leave those poorly built homes that they have fixed up over the years, but not everyone will have to leave. This is how things are in Caivano. We have climbed the first step, but the ladder is long”.
