The story linked to the Clostebol case by Jannik Sinner is enriched with a new chapter. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against theabsolution of the Italian tennis player, recently judged without fault or negligence by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
In an official statement, WADA explained the reasons for the appeal, arguing that “the finding of 'no fault or negligence' is not correct under the applicable law.” The Agency is therefore requesting a sanction for Sinner that includes a period of ineligibility of between one and two years.
The case dates back to March 2024, when Sinner tested positive twice for clostebol, a prohibited substance. Although the ITIA ruled that the tennis player was not at fault or negligent in taking the substance, WADA believes that this decision does not comply with international anti-doping regulations.
“The World Anti-Doping Agency does not seek disqualification for any result, except that already imposed by the court of first instance,” we read further in the note. The case is now in the hands of the CAS, which will have to decide on the appeal filed. In the meantime, WADA has announced that it will not release further statements until the matter is definitively resolved. Jannik Sinner's competitive future therefore remains suspended pending the final verdict.
