An inmate at the Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi prison, in the province of Avellino, attempted to take his own life by hanging himself in his cell at four in the morning.
The man, of Neapolitan origin, had planned the gesture by choosing a post-control time to evade night surveillance.
The intervention of a providential prison police officer, who, suspicious of some noises, managed to save him in extremis.
The Uspp union intervened on the incident, with the president Giuseppe Moretti and the regional secretary Ciro Auricchio: “Despite serious staff shortages, the prison police continues to demonstrate professionalism by saving human lives.”
The regional delegate of Uspp of Campania, Pasquale Repola, has launched an appeal for “the urgent sending of reinforcements to support the institute”, while Moretti and Auricchio underlined the importance of rewarding the work of the agents: “Our applause goes to those who took part in the rescue, hoping that the compensation procedures provided for by law will be activated as soon as possible”.
In the Irpinia prison, the trade unionists conclude, “despite the chronic lack of staff, it is very difficult to ensure order and safety”.

It is truly worrying to see how the conditions in which prisoners live are so difficult. The lack of staff and security leads to tragic situations like this, where a man tried to end his life.
I don't know how it is possible that in a place where security should be guaranteed, there are such problems. The agents do what they can, but more support is needed to avoid these dramatic situations.
I believe that it is essential to improve prison conditions to prevent similar suicide attempts. The interventions of the police are important, but they must not be the only solution.
