The thick column of black smoke generated by the flames is visible from kilometers away, even from the highway and even in Naples. The flames, fueled by strong winds, quickly engulfed the entire warehouse of the company Seneca ex Helios and several bales of waste piled up in the external square.
Four fire engines intervened on site to put out the flames, as did the Carabinieri of the Scafati station, who began investigations to determine the causes of the fire, which are currently unknown.
Arpac was alerted to carry out the necessary surveys to evaluate the extent of the environmental damage.
As a precaution, two buildings adjacent to the warehouse were evacuated, for a total of 16 families. Fortunately, no injuries or poisoning were reported.
Citizens' controversy over the dangerousness of the site
Controversy is raging on social media over the management of the site and its dangerousness close to numerous homes and some tomato processing factories that have suffered significant damage from the burning substances.
Mayor Pasquale Aliberti, through social media, recommended that citizens turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems, close windows and rinse fruit and vegetables thoroughly. “We are on site with the police and firefighters to manage the emergency and ensure the application of all safety measures,” declared the mayor.
Mayors of neighboring municipalities have launched similar appeals, urging the population to limit exposure to fumes.
