Santa Maria Capua Vetere – The verdict has arrived in the trial related to the illicit use of cell phones inside the Sammaritan prison.

The investigation
The investigation, coordinated by the Sammarinese Public Prosecutor's Office, began after the suspicion of illicit trafficking within the penitentiary institution, in the period between October 2021 and January 2022According to investigators, un phone had been smuggled into the prison and used for make numerous calls outwards, in violation of safety regulations.
The cross between the telephone records and the investigative activities have allowed us to trace the prisoners involved, who would have contacted family and acquaintances, evading controls and circumventing the rules imposed by the detention regime.
The sentences
The penalties imposed range from one to two years of imprisonment. The most severe sentences – two years in prison – they were touched by Anthony Santafata, Francesco Massaro e John DeMartino.

Eight defendants were acquitted with full formula, “for not having committed the act”:
Arduino Balsam, Emanuel Soup, Constantine of Castile, Alberto Piscitelli, Rudy Letizia, Abdelkader Kassimi, Luigi De Lucia e Gennaro Falaga.

The verdict has been issued but there are many questions that remain unanswered. These cases of phone trafficking inside prisons are unfortunately common and more must be done to prevent them from happening again.
