AOSTA – He tried to deceive a ninety-year-old man with the classic fake accident scam, but was caught red-handed by the police and arrested in flagrante delicto: the protagonist is a 60-year-old originally from Naples, already under house arrest in his city, who will now have to answer for attempted aggravated fraud and evasion.
The plan was set in motion yesterday afternoon, when the man, together with an accomplice who has not yet been identified, telephoned an elderly resident of Aosta. On the phone, pretending to be a lawyer, he raised the alarm: “Your son caused a serious accident. He hit a man and a child. A bail of 8.000 euros is needed to avoid prison.” A well-known script, designed to target the vulnerability of the most fragile victims.
Shortly after, the scammer showed up directly at the pensioner's home, managing to get him to hand over about 800 euros, the only amount of cash available. But the scam didn't stop there. The man convinced the elderly man to follow him to withdraw the rest of the missing money from an ATM.
And it was during this journey that the Carabinieri of the Operational and Radiomobile Nucleus of the Aosta Company, on patrol, noticed the couple and intervened. The suspicious behavior of the 60-year-old attracted their attention: after a quick check, the truth emerged. The man was immediately arrested and taken to the barracks.
The Prosecutor's Office Aosta has requested the validation of the arrest, while investigations continue to identify the accomplice and verify whether the same modus operandi has been used in other cases in the area. Once again, the timely intervention of the police has prevented an elderly man from being deprived of his savings, thus avoiding a much more bitter epilogue.
