Lizzano (Taranto) – Four lives shattered in an instant, two engaged couples torn from their youth by a road accident that occurred during the night between Saturday and Sunday on provincial road 110, between Lizzano and Faggiano.
Article Key Points
The funerals of the victims will be held tomorrow, while the communities of Sava, Manduria and Torricella mourn their children: Giovanni Massaro, 22, worker; Paolo Marangi, 19, student; Giorgia Narducci and Anita Di Coste, both sixteen.
The dynamics of the accident
They had just left a club in Taranto, where they had celebrated Paolo's birthday, who would have turned 19 yesterday. On the way back, shortly after 2 am, the Fiat Idea driven by Giovanni lost control on a curve, leaving the road, overturning and crashing into a centuries-old tree.
The impact was devastating: the car, a small gray minivan, was crumpled. Two of the boys were thrown from the passenger compartment, the other two were pulled from the wreckage by the Fire Brigade.
On site, in addition to the rescuers, the Carabinieri arrived, who found only rubble and personal objects scattered on the asphalt: an earring, an electronic cigarette, silent witnesses of an evening that was supposed to be a celebration.
Mourning and dismay
The mayors of the victims' countries of origin have proclaimed the city mourning. "A huge tragedy that leaves you speechless," commented the mayor of Torricella. The friends of the boys, in shock, remember them as "wonderful boys, in love with life". There are those who hope that "they did not suffer".
A cursed road?
The stretch of provincial road 110 where the accident occurred is known for its straights alternating with sharp curves and poor lighting. A lethal mix, especially at night, when speed can become a mortal danger. The investigations of the Carabinieri, coordinated by the Taranto Prosecutor's Office, will try to reconstruct the precise causes of the crash, even if at the moment there are no doubts about the dynamics.
The black balance of the weekend in Puglia
The one in Lizzano is only the latest in a series of road tragedies that in less than 48 hours they killed eight people in Puglia:
- A mother and her seven-month-pregnant daughter died Friday in a two-car collision between Bisceglie and Andria.
- A 56-year-old cyclist was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver on provincial road 231 on Saturday afternoon.
- A 39-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday morning in Fasano after losing control of his scooter.
A endless slaughter, which reignites the debate on road safety and controls. Meanwhile, tomorrow, four coffins will silently cross the streets of Taranto, accompanied by the pain of those who will no longer be able to hug those boys.
