Napoli.A petition signed by 701 citizens, including parents and residents of the Vomero neighborhood, has shed light on the serious situation of danger in which the 1633 students of the Belvedere Middle School and the G. Fortunati Institute find themselves on a daily basis.
The streets leading to the two institutes, in particular Via Mascagni, Via Ribera, Via Rossini and Via Caldieri, are characterised by heavy traffic and are one-way, exposing students to a real risk of accidents.
The fatal accident involving the lady Vincenza Fiorentino in Via Caldieri is a tragic reminder of the precarious conditions of these roads. Despite the seriousness of the situation, so far insufficient measures have been taken to ensure the safety of young commuters.
In the complaint presented to the Mayor of Naples, Attorney Fabio Procaccini, the legal representative of the signatories, highlighted the urgent need to intervene with a series of concrete measures, including:
Reduction of speed limits: Imposition of lower speed limits on affected roads, especially during rush hour.
Creating safe pedestrian crossings: Construction of raised and signalized pedestrian crossings at school entrances.
Installation of intelligent traffic lights: Introduction of traffic lights that modulate the green times based on pedestrian flow, giving priority to students during school entry and exit times.
Increased surveillance: Strengthening of municipal police checks to ensure compliance with the highway code.
Creation of safe pedestrian routes: Creation of protected and illuminated pedestrian paths, separated from the roadway, to allow students to reach schools safely.
“If we could get all these measures – says the lawyer Procaccini – it would guarantee that minimum level of safety that every European city should offer to its very young. We hope to receive feedback very quickly – concludes the lawyer – in the absence and in the unfortunate event of other investments, we will hold the Municipality jointly responsible”.
The signatories of the petition ask the Municipality of Naples to take these proposals seriously and to begin as soon as possible the necessary works to make the streets of Vomero safer and more welcoming for all citizens, especially the youngest.
“We can't take it anymore – says Jorel Sorrentino, mother of a Belvedere student – it is distressing to know that our children have to cross extremely dangerous roads that lack even the most basic safety systems. In the few areas designated for road crossings – concludes Jorel – the white lines are completely faded”.
