On December 2nd, Italian truck drivers will gather in a TIR aggregation and in a “Tir-Lumaca” demonstration to draw the Government's attention to the serious problems that afflict the road haulage sector. “Problems – says Maurizio Longo, general secretary of Trasportounito – with respect to which we can euphemistically say that the Government, and in particular the Minister of Transport, has paid little attention.”
The decision to adopt “tangible” forms of protest was taken during the Trasportounito assembly in Casoria, Naples, as a sign of protest against government inertia and the failure to resolve the critical issues that weigh on national road haulage.
Despite the ineffectiveness of the current rules being widely acknowledged, no concrete action has been taken to reform them. The driver shortage problem also remains unsolved, with solutions that would require structural interventions rather than the paltry annual incentive of 5 million euros. Finally, road safety continues to be neglected, despite the worsening conditions of infrastructure.
"On December 2, our protest - says Dr. Antimo Caturano, President of Trasportounito Caserta - will be the beginning of a real dispute against the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. The Ministry has never responded adequately to our proposals for regulatory changes, nor to the requests for restructuring procedures for the lack of drivers, nor to the needs to improve road safety or the conditions of the infrastructure, involving the trade associations in a real way."
"We see no news on the horizon - concludes Caturano - and this saddens us deeply. We ask the institutions for clarity and concreteness, but once again we find ourselves faced with a re-proposal of the figure of Pontius Pilate."
