Salerno. The AOU San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona confirms itself as a symbol of readiness, humanity and solidarity, always on the front lines in rescue and assistance. A dramatic story, which could have turned into a tragedy, instead ended with a happy ending thanks to the timely intervention of the Salerno hospital.
This morning, at port of Salerno, a 12-year-old girl suffering from paraplegia and her mother were found inside a container together with about ten people from an internal area of Iran. The two, visibly distressed and in conditions of malnutrition, were immediately transferred to the Pediatrics Department of Ruggi, directed by Dr. Carla Mauro.
Here, the medical and nursing staff welcomed mother and daughter with professionalism and warmth, administering the necessary care and subjecting them to the necessary clinical tests.
Despite the hardships suffered, the two are in good health. Immediately after, the solidarity network that revolves around the hospital was activated, involving the police, cultural mediators, the Red Cross and parish associations.
Thanks to this collective effort, mother and daughter received basic necessities and assistance. They will remain hospitalized until a family home is found that can welcome them and guarantee them a safe place.
The same day brought another significant episode. During a shift in the pediatric emergency room, a doctor found a sweatshirt containing valuables and an identity document.
The Ruggi authorities promptly identified the owner: a man of foreign nationality, also coming from the Salerno container and hospitalized in the hospital's Cardiology department following an illness. After the necessary care and completion of the tests, the man was discharged and welcomed into a protected facility.
These episodes, intertwined between emergency and solidarity, highlight once again the great qualities of generosity, altruism and professionalism of Ruggi. A virtuous example of how healthcare can go beyond physical care, offering hope and support to those who find themselves in situations of extreme vulnerability.

It is interesting how Ruggi hospital has shown great readiness in rescuing these people. However, it is not clear why they arrived in those conditions. Surely, an improvement in reception services is needed to avoid similar situations.
