The new Rai miniseries “Leopardi – Il poeta dell'infinito”, directed by Sergio Rubini, is preparing to bring to the small screen an unpublished representation of the great Italian poet and philosopher Giacomo Leopardi. It will be broadcast in prime time on Rai1 on January 7 and 8.
The production aims to update the figure of Leopardi, presenting him as an intellectual capable of speaking to the men of the future, and today more than ever contemporary.
An unpublished portrait
The miniseries, the result of the collaboration between Rai Fiction, IBC Movie, Rai Com and Oplon Film, is written by Carla Cavalluzzi, Angelo Pasquini and Rubini himself. It offers an unprecedented portrait of Leopardi, maintaining historical coherence, but with a contemporary touch. The poet is described as a rebel who with his verses challenged the conventions of his time, opposing the Austrian invader and provoking institutions such as the Church and the founders of the Italian state.
Places and protagonists
The series is shot in the natural settings of Recanati, Marche, Bari and Puglia, supported by the respective local film commissions. Other sets include cities such as Mantua, Turin, Rome, Naples and Bologna. In the role of Giacomo Leopardi we find Leonardo Maltese, already awarded at the Nastri D'Argento 2023 for his cinematic interpretations. Among the actors, also Alessio Boni, Valentina Cervi, Giusy Buscemi, Cristiano Caccamo, Alessandro Preziosi and Fausto Russo Alesi, who complete the cast.
Described as a major costume production, the series aims to do justice to the genius of Leopardi, a poet and thinker who, through his works, continues to influence modern thought.
