Phlegraean Fields, the land rises and the sea retreats: "Since 1950, the ground has risen by over four meters."

Rome – A total land uplift of 4,60 meters since 1950, with evident transformations of the landscape and coastline. This is the snapshot taken by Mauro Antonio Di Vito, former director of the Vesuvius Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), speaking this afternoon at a hearing before the joint Environment and Budget Committees of the Chamber of Deputies.

The meeting is part of a series of informal consultations related to the process of converting into law the decree of August 7, 2026, issued to address the critical issues in the Phlegraean Fields.

Bradyseism data and the retreat of the sea

During his speech, the specialist reviewed the dynamic evolution of the Neapolitan volcano, emphasizing the importance of field surveys. "The Vesuvius Observatory boasts a broad and efficient monitoring network, composed of numerous stations that constantly and regularly measure the evolution of the area," Di Vito explained.

The expert highlighted how the seismicity of the area is directly linked to the thrust from below: "Earthquakes are almost exclusively associated with phases of ground uplift." Among the most visible effects of this prolonged phenomenon is a significant retreat of the sea along the coast.

Prevention strategies and the role of citizens

In addition to diagnosing geological phenomena, the volcanologist has outlined a path to reducing the impact of risks on the resident population, starting with a scientific study of ongoing processes.

To mitigate the effects of volcanic and seismic activity, according to Di Vito, it is essential to act on multiple fronts:

Technological enhancement: Continue to invest in increasingly accurate and advanced monitoring tools.

Training and information: Promote a widespread information campaign aimed at citizens and local administrators responsible for managing emergencies.

Field exercises: Plan periodic simulations to disseminate real-world knowledge of the dangers and educate the public on the correct behavior to adopt in an emergency.
