Tragedy on the Amalfi Coast: Man dies at sea in front of his children

A quiet late-summer Sunday turned tragic on the beaches of the Amalfi Coast. This afternoon, September 6th, a 63-year-old man, a resident of Salerno and a frequent visitor to the area, tragically died in the waters of Spiaggia dei Limoni, a picturesque cove nestled in the rocks between the towns of Cetara and Erchie.

The dive into the sea and the alarm

According to initial reports, the 63-year-old was joined in the cove by his children, who had arrived from the sea aboard a small sailboat. After spending some time together on board the vessel, the father decided to swim back to shore with his children. Shortly after the group dive, however, the children noticed that the man wasn't moving and was floating face down on the surface of the water.

Rescue and investigations

The family immediately dived in to reach him, carrying him to the shore and desperately attempting to resuscitate him, while those on the beach raised the alarm by calling 118. The Amalfi Coast Red Cross water ambulance quickly arrived on the scene.

The medical staff on board tried everything possible, but could only confirm the man's death, caused by sudden cardiac arrest.

The Salerno Port Authority, with a patrol boat, and the Carabinieri of the Amalfi Coast responded to the incident to carry out the usual investigations. After being informed of the incident, the Public Prosecutor on duty at the Salerno Prosecutor's Office confirmed the death from natural causes, authorizing the release of the body to the family.
