A large landslide hit the Amalfi state road in the municipality of Amalfi.
According to Mayor Daniele Milano, from initial reports there do not appear to be any victims, but at the moment it cannot be ruled out either. The landslide broke away from the rocky ridge that flanks the state road, completely invaded the road and also involved a section below the Amalfi seafront. “It will take hours to clear the road and only then will we be able to be certain that there are no victims,” says the mayor, “we will certainly proceed with the evacuation of some houses.”
Shortly after 9,30:163 this morning, a large landslide broke away from the rocky ridge of the San Biagio district, overlooking the seafront, at the height of the La Marinella restaurant and fell onto the XNUMX Amalfitana state road, literally burying it at the entrance to the “Matteo Camera” tunnel, and then ending up in the parking area in front of the restaurant, damaging cars and structures. The road – as reported by the Bishopric – is closed to vehicular traffic. The mandatory routes are via Positano and Sorrento, and Fuore and Agerola. The old retaining wall of the pedestrian street of the San Biagio district, clinging to the rock, gave way under the weight of the incessant rains of the past few days. The old homes right next to the sinkhole are at serious risk, and their static stability is unknown.
"That stretch of the hillside had already been affected by consolidation work two years ago. I hope that the Prosecutor's Office will now investigate to understand how these works were conducted given what happened this morning." This is what Antonio De Luca, former mayor of Amalfi and now opposition councilor, said. "It seems that there are no victims, at least up to now, but what happened is truly absurd," he added.
