Legambiente: “Once again, it is the extraordinary work of the police forces, in particular of the Carabinieri Command for Environmental Protection and Ecological Transition, and of the judiciary, as the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Salerno did in this case, that reveals the dense network of illicit interests that fuel environmental crime in Italy.
It is the lack of recycling plants that fuels the new routes of illicit waste trafficking, which see Campania simultaneously as a site of land abandonment and a departure hub for eco-bales that end up from Veneto to Calabria, often in abandoned industrial warehouses.
There is a demand for recovery and recycling that must be responded to with effectiveness and quality, using immediately and in the best way the resources, to be increased, that the PNRR allocates to the circular economy in the South. Thus emptying the criminal business and instead creating virtuous supply chains, with which to guarantee employment and sustainable management of special waste, the same that, if managed illegally, become poison for territories and communities, putting the health of citizens at risk”.
In a joint note Stefano Ciafani and Mariateresa Imparato, respectively national president of Legambiente and president of Legambiente Campania, comment on the operation on illegal waste trafficking
