At the Policlinico in Naples, a 13-kilogram tumor mass was removed from a 50-year-old man. The patient is doing well.
Thirteen kilos in weight, 40 x 40 x 50 cm in size: these are the record numbers of the retroperitoneal tumor removed a few days ago from a fifty-year-old woman from the province of Naples.
The extraordinary operation was carried out at the Policlinico Federico II by the surgical team led by professors Michele Santangelo e Vincent D'Alessandro, responsible for Uosd of General Surgery and retroperitoneal pathologies of the Federician Company.
The patient, following the onset of anemia, asthenia and weight loss, but in the absence of other signs or symptoms, underwent first level diagnostic tests that revealed a huge abdominal mass. She then turned to Federico II and in particular to Professor Santangelo, who had already dealt with similar cases in the past.
“There are very few tumors of this size worldwide – the professor emphasizes – with these characteristics and which present the possibility of undertaking a treatment and complete recovery path for the patient.
A surgical challenge that was faced thanks to the multidisciplinary skills and cutting-edge technologies, some of which were recently acquired, that the Federico II Company is equipped with. The operation was conducted in a linear manner and without any intraoperative problems thanks to the cooperation and synergy between all the professionals involved”.
“It's difficult – Professor D'Alessandro specifies – that tumors of this size develop and when it happens more frequently they affect the female genital system, rarely starting from the retroperitoneal tissues and in these cases they are difficult to remove with a surgical intervention with curative intent, as instead was the case for this patient. Other times, when it is possible, we rely first on oncologists, for a neoadjuvant therapy”.
La patient She is now well, she has been discharged and, once she has recovered, she will return to work and her regular daily activities. “In this three-year period we have invested heavily in cutting-edge technologies and well-organized pathways to ensure timely responses and safety for operators and patients. All these characteristics make the Policlinico Federico II a fundamental point of reference for the Campania and national healthcare reality”, underlines the General Director of the AOU Federico II Anna Iervolino.
