Salerno, shortage of blood supply at Ruggi hospital. “Donating blood means saving lives.”
“We have an absolute need to address the pressing shortage of blood supplies, which are becoming increasingly scarce.”
These are the worrying words of Dr. Ferdinando Annarumma, Director of the Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine Service at the AOU San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona in Salerno, who reports a critical situation that is also widespread at a regional and national level.
“I trust in the common sense, altruism and generosity of individuals,” adds Annarumma, “but it is essential that the population be informed about the real conditions in which many hospitals find themselves, where blood supplies are now completely exhausted, and many patients risk not being transfused.
Donating blood is equivalent to saving lives, concludes the doctor, and currently, we are unable to perform transfusions either to patients who transfuse daily, with chronic conditions and low hemoglobin levels, nor are we able to proceed with cardiac and vascular surgery interventions”.
The invitation that starts from Ruggi and extends to all citizens, is to urge them to donate blood, to help those in difficulty, also thinking that each of us, could need a life-saving transfusion in the future, to face an emergency situation.
The transfusion center of the Salerno hospital is open every morning from 8 am to 12:30 pm, as well as Avis Salerno and the various transfusion centers located in the province of Salerno (Battipaglia, Nocera Inferiore, Vallo della Lucania, Eboli). To become a donor, it is also very simple, you must be in good health and go to the collection centers without having consumed milk. You can instead drink a coffee or have had a light breakfast first.
