Two other leading members of the gang were arrested with him, namely Salvatore Barile and Ciro Mazzarella. The charges according to the DDA of Napoli, are of a criminal association nature mafioso and extortion. The operation was carried out by agents of the Naples Flying Squad and the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Naples, with the collaboration of agents of the Genoa Railway Police.
Barile Salvatore and Mazzarella Michele are seriously suspected of several extortionate episodes committed against criminals forced to pay an extortionate sum to the clan for carrying out illegal activities in the territories under the criminal jurisdiction of the aforementioned criminal organization.
All three are considered seriously suspected of having promoted, organized and participated in the criminal cartel called the “Mazzarella clan”, a mafia-type association historically rooted and dominant in numerous neighborhoods of the city of Naples, as well as in various municipalities of the province, including the neighborhoods of Forcella, Maddalena, San Giovanni a Teduccio, Connolo, Case Nuove, Mercato, Porta Nolana, San Gaetani and the municipalities of San Giorgio a Cremano, Portici, Pomigliano and Somma Vesuviana.
Among others, the mother ended up in jail during the raid the other day Antonietta Virenti, who became a real boss woman and who decided the amount of the protection money that the managers of the stalls of the Maddalena market had to pay to the gang.
Michele Mazzarella was released from prison in 2019 after a long period of detention and is now returning to his homeland's prisons. Last summer he was the protagonist of a singular episode: he was expelled from the island for having violated probation: he was staying in a municipality other than Naples, he did not carry the mandatory preceptor's card with him, but above all he was in the company of another criminal.
He was with another known criminal, Umberto Caldarelli, also expelled from the island.
