In Naples, after the protests of the cafes overlooking Piazza Trieste e Trento, including the historic Gambrinus, the Municipality is preparing to pass a new ordinance that extends to 20pm this evening the obligation for bars and restaurants – initially scheduled for 17pm – to clear the square of tables.
The measure is part of an ordinance by the Naples Police Headquarters adopted in anticipation of the first of five evenings that will see the singer Gigi D'Alessio in concert on the stage of Piazza del Plebiscito starting tonight. Ordinance received with little favor by the owners of the businesses in the area surrounding the square who have asked the Municipality to intervene.
“We went a little while ago – explain Antonio Visconti and Gennaro Pelliccia of the Monidee bar in Piazza Trieste e Trento – to talk to the councilors Teresa Armato and Antonio De Jesu about the letter we received yesterday evening in which they told us that starting from 17 pm today the tables had to be removed. They explained to us that a municipal ordinance will soon arrive that provides for the closing of the tables at 20 pm, thus accepting our request”.
With the bar owners there were also representatives of Gambrinus and Rosati bar. This morning Gambrinus did not set up tables in its gazebo, giving up certain income on days when Naples is full of tourists.
“The ordinance to close at 17pm is not being applied,” De Jesu confirmed on the sidelines of the City Council, “because a municipal ordinance is coming soon in which Mayor Manfredi will write the times when table service will be suspended.”
Meanwhile, Piazza Trieste e Trento and Via San Carlo are being cleared of scooters and taxis. In particular, the Municipal Police are clearing the parking lots of scooters in front of the Teatro San Carlo. This activity is also part of the order issued by the Naples Police Headquarters.
