He allegedly defrauded an elderly couple using the 'fake nephew' technique. For this reason, the Carabinieri of the Torrimpietra Station, in the province of Rome, arrested a 29-year-old originally from Giuliano in Campania, in the province of Naples, and already known to the police for previous judicial matters, seriously suspected of having defrauded an elderly married couple, resident in the Aranova area of the municipality of Fiumicino.
The couple allegedly received a phone call from a person who identified himself as the grandson, who asked the grandfather to urgently go to the local post office to collect some receipts from a courier and the grandmother to collect jewelry and cash from the house to pay for the package, informing them that everything would be collected by a "friend" who would show up at the house shortly thereafter.
At the post office, however, one of the users, later revealed to be an off-duty Penitentiary Police Officer, overheard the elderly man's telephone conversations, understood what was happening and convinced the man to return home with him immediately, at the same time alerting the local Carabinieri Station.
The Carabinieri patrol, which immediately intervened on the spot, then managed to block the way of the telephone operator's accomplice who, after having collected the valuables, tried to flee, being found still in possession of the loot, estimated at around 15.000 euros. The 29-year-old was transferred to the Civitavecchia prison.
