Pep Guardiola underwent routine surgery today for a back problem. This was announced in a statement by Manchester City, explaining that the coach “has been suffering from severe back pain for some time and has flown to Barcelona for emergency surgery performed by Dr. Mireia Illueca.”
“The surgery was a success and Pep will now recover and rehabilitate in Barcelona.” Guardiola will be away from his team for a couple of games. In his absence, assistant coach Juanma Lillo will oversee the first team's training and will be on the bench until Guardiola returns.
Guardiola is expected to return to the bench of the reigning European champions after the next international break. “Everyone at the Manchester City They wish Pep a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in Manchester soon”, reads the note.
