A large fire has destroyed over six hectares of shrubs and Mediterranean scrub in Monte Cotto, a hilly area in the municipality of Barano d'Ischia.
The flames began to spread yesterday morning and seemed to have been tamed thanks to the intervention of firefighters and volunteers. However, in the late afternoon, they regained strength also putting some homes at risk.
The fire continued to burn for several hours, so much so that two teams of firefighters were sent from Naples to support those already present at the Ischia barracks. The ten reinforcement units, with two tankers and two off-road vehicles, left on the last ship headed for Ischia, which suffered a short delay in embarking them.
As a precaution, six homes threatened by the flames were evacuated and residents spent the night with family or friends. The fire is currently under control and does not pose a serious concern.
A helicopter is expected to arrive this morning to drop water from above on the remaining fires and finally put out the fire. At the moment, the causes of the fire are still unknown, although a possible malicious act is not excluded.
